Dire Straits – Rare Promo Photo of the Original Line-up (1978)

A must-have gem for any Dire Straits fan: this black and white photograph captures the original quartet of the band at the dawn of their career. Taken in 1978, it coincides with the release of their self-titled debut album—just before Sultans of Swing propelled them to worldwide fame.

Pictured from left to right:

  • David Knopfler: rhythm guitarist and Mark's younger brother, known for his folk-oriented touch. He would leave after recording Making Movies.
  • John Illsley: bassist and the only member to stay alongside Mark Knopfler throughout Dire Straits’ history.
  • Mark Knopfler: iconic frontman, singer, and fingerpicking guitar genius behind songs like Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations, and Brothers in Arms.
  • Pick Withers: jazz-influenced drummer, who left after the Love Over Gold album in 1982.

This image radiates the raw charm of a band still playing smoky London pubs—years before the packed stadium tours of the mid-80s.
