Fondé en 1983 par l’énigmatique Quorthon (Thomas Börje Forsberg), Bathory est considéré comme l’un des pionniers absolus du black metal et du viking metal. Originaire de Suède, le groupe commence par un son cru, rapide et satanique avec des albums devenus cultes comme Bathory (1984), The Return… (1985) et Under the Sign of the Black Mark (1987). Ce style primitif et radical influence toute la scène norvégienne à venir.
Mais Bathory opère un tournant majeur à la fin des années 80 : abandonnant les thématiques sataniques, Quorthon embrasse l’imaginaire nordique et mythologique. Avec Blood Fire Death (1988) puis Hammerheart (1990), il jette les bases du viking metal : des compositions épiques, lentes, chantées de manière solennelle, et des paroles inspirées des sagas scandinaves.
Jusqu’à son décès en 2004, Quorthon est resté une figure culte du metal extrême, refusant toute médiatisation, jouant tous les instruments sur disque, et repoussant sans cesse les limites créatives. Bathory reste aujourd’hui une légende incontournable, aussi influente que mystérieuse.
